In June 2004 Armenia, Georgia and Azerbaijan were included in the European Neighbourhood Policy (ENP). In March 2005 the European Commission presented the reports on these countries (Country Report) to the European Council.
The inclusion of Armenia in the ENP resulted in a new level of relations between the RA and the EU. Armenia acquired the status of an EU neighbour country.
The EU-Armenia ENP Action Plan was adopted and signed on November 14, 2006. Within the framework of the European Neighbourhood Policy the implementation of the Action Plan will significantly advance the approximation of Armenia’s legislation, norms and standards to those of the European Union. In this context, the preconditions were created for further economic integration, social cohesion, poverty reduction and environmental protection by ensuring long term sustainable development.
In March 2015, the European Commission published the ENP Review proposal to make the cooperation with the partner countries more effective. The questions on the future of the ENP were divided into 5 directions: differentiation, targeted cooperation, flexibility, mutual ownership and visibility. On November 18, 2015 the European Parliament approved the Revised ENP and on December 14, 2015 the European Council adopted it.
After revising the ENP and, in particular, after securing the principle of differentiation, the EU adopted new approaches for constructing relations with its partners.
The Republic of Armenia has successfully completed the implementation of the planned measures of European Neighbourhood Policy RA-EU Action Plan for 2009-2011, 2012-2013 and 2014-2015.
